Although plans are forging ahead for a fully fledged maintenance facility at Leeming Bar with covered accommodation for both rolling stock and maintenance staff, there was still the immediate problem of providing suitable covered accommodation in the meantime to allow essential maintenance work to continue in the wet, the wind and the cold of a Leeming Bar winter.
It was decided to invest in a polytunnel to form a temporary covering over the pit area in the station yard. However, this was not the sort of polytunnel that you would use to grow your tomatoes in - far from it!
The structure accommodates a coach and is covered over on all sides with a heavy duty plastic covering, having a sliding door at one end. The supports for the polytunnel are securely concreted into the ground. That said, it will be possible to resite the polytunnel once the shed project progresses enough. During the January the vegetation team have also had to be a drainage team due to flooding on various parts of the line. This flooding at Newton Grange was caused by a blocked pipe under a user worked crossing - During the heavy rains it had caused the track to be flooded (30/12/2015)

Now the 20' ISO Contr has been moved West, Phase 2 of the platform can continue more easily. Phase 2 is approx. 30' long; bricks and lime mortar; and will rise approx. 10-12' to modern platform height so that trains can stop to allow passengers on/off them. Phase 3 will be about 180' long; of timber construction; and it will permit 3 carriages to stop (06/01/2016)
