The WR have been successful in acquiring this class 143 unit to complete the set of those which lasted over 35 years in service. What makes this even more special is that it is an ex Tyne and Wear PTE unit (143623). We may be the only railway to have one of each of the 142/3/4 classes of pacer.
We had hoped to fund the rail move by running a rail tour to cover some or all of the cost. Sadly, Covid and some route restrictions have prevented the tour and may even prevent the rail move. (1990)Click here to see higher resolution photo

On the 29th May, the first day of running for the Heritage Train Service from Bedale to Scruton there was, unknown to the railway, a special passenger on board. Barry Johnson arrived, with his wife, on a train from Bedale and in the course of being shown around they mentioned that his grandfather and great grandfather had worked on the line. It seems that his grandfather was Aubrey Johnson who is recorded on the 1911 census as a Railway Clerk, living at Scruton Station and his great grandfather was Francis Johnson who was Scruton Station Master from 1908 and died in post in 1916. They were given a VIP tour of Scruton Station. They were delighted with the restoration of the Station. (29/05/2021)

The Leyburn artist Lynn Ward was commissioned to paint an official picture of Bedale Railway Station. The heritage line was so pleased with her work they appointed her artist in residence. Her first act in the new role was to create a painting of Leyburn Railway Station with steam locomotive J27 arriving at the station. The work features volunteer Bernard Morris, resplendent in his period stationmaster’s uniform.
At the meeting of Leyburn’s team of railway volunteers held on the platform, Ms Ward handed the painting to Mr Morris. It will have pride of place in the station. (23/06/2021)Click here to see higher resolution photo
