The front of house noticeboard at Leyburn had suffered a catastrophic failure when high winds tore the supporting screws through the plywood backing which had delaminated due to water ingress.
Thanks to the Direct Works team a new piece of plywood was supplied.
This was then edged to protect the end grain, painted and the noticeboard frame attached. (06/07/2025)Click here to see higher resolution photo

Aiskew - footpath crossing No 4 on the west side of the main level crossing.
This footpath crossing had a concrete stile and a slope up to the line on each side. The crossing was also staggered across the railway. This photo is of the one nearest the road.
Safety improvements include replacing the two concrete stiles with gates, installation of steps and fencing improvements. The new fencing will guide users to the correct place to cross the line ensuring they are then at right angles to the line. This will give them a good view of the line in each direction to make sure it is safe to cross. (23/06/2025)Click here to see higher resolution photo

Leeming Bar yard is being tidied up, in readiness for it to be relaid to provide better access into the shed and to provide an ash pt for steam locomotives. The bits of point work are for a three-way point which it is intended to install shortly to allow the additional installation of an ash pit for steam locos (22/07/2025)

Leeming Bar yard is in the process of being tidied up and redundant equipment relocated or disposed of. Once the yard has been cleared, it is intended to relay the track in the yard. A three way point will be installed in the yard's mouth with the left track going against the back of the station platform where an ash pit for steam locos will be installed. The the rest of the tracks will be relaid so as to give better access into the shed. At the moment the track into the right side of the shed is on too tight a curve for big steam engines or other long wheelbase stock to negotiate it. (29/07/2025)

Restoration of a lever frame at Scruton - When we arrived for work, we discovered that the signal box pit had been flooded during a recent cloudburst. It had drained away to some extent, but the wooden frame support beans were still partially covered in water to a couple of inches. You can clearly see the extent to how deep the flooding had been. During the flooding the support beams had floated and were now out of position, so they had to be repositioned (22/07/2025)

Restoration of a lever frame at Scruton - The flooded pit in Scruton signal box. The side frames and spindle which had been put to one side were now partially under water to just above the bolts on the base which secures the base and side plates together.
There was still some water on the side frame flange around the spindle shaft hole, so you can see how deep the water had got. The bolts on the base of the frames were still under water. These will now need stripping down again and cleaned,. (22/07/2025)Click here to see higher resolution photo

The same view afterwards. The veg team will now move on to another crossing. These tasks are hot sweaty jobs In PPE, and strimmers often strike obstacles out of sight necessitating frequent blade attention. In this case the area in the right foreground contained wire. (09/07/2025)
