Wensleydale Railway - Photo Archive
Welcome to the
Photo Website and Archive
We have now restarted train services following the Covid lockdown. At the moment due to the amount of work required to be carried out on the rest of the line we are only running from Bedale to Scruton, calling at Leeming Bar. There will be the opportunity to view the award winning restored station at Scruton and the restored Station House at Leeming Bar. There will be volunteers at both locations to talk with and show visitors around. If at all possible (due to Covid) please buy your tickets in advance though the railway’s website - https://wensleydale-railway.co.uk
HERITAGE EDUCATION TALKS
As most of you will already know (but if not see below) the Wensleydale Railway was given a grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to restore Leeming Bar station and to share its heritage with more people and in new ways. When the station house reopens, there will be a vibrant public programme of free events and activities with something to appeal to everyone.
In the meantime, during March 2021 the Wensleydale Railway has been presenting a number of live Digital Talks via Zoom. These talks have been recorded and are now available for everyone to watch on our YouTube Channel here

HERITAGE LOTTERY FUNDED RESTORATION OF
LEEMING BAR STATION HOUSE
Despite the Corona virus epidemic, the Heritage Lottery Funded restoration of Leeming Bar Station House is progressing well. The contractor has now finished their restoration of the building and the next stage will be the decoration and fitting out of the building which will be done mainly by our own volunteers. A photo gallery showing the restoration of the building by the contractor can be seen here. A photo gallery showing the redecoration of the building by our volunteers can be seen here
The grant of £368,000 for the restoration of Leeming Bar Station House is the largest yet awarded to the Wensleydale Railway and represents a significant vote of confidence in its direction of travel. Building work is planned to start in early 2020 when people working in the station will be re-housed in temporary buildings adjacent to the Goods Shed. The restoration will take around 9 months to complete and will include restoration of the station family’s accommodation in 1920’s style. Once complete the public will have access to the ticket office, waiting rooms and station family’s lounge and kitchen. A wide range of activities with railway themes will be delivered in and from the station house to the public, schools, families and community groups. The Wensleydale Railway is building a national reputation for the excellence of its restoration work and delivery of heritage programmes. Thanks to the National Lottery players and the Railway's supporters and volunteers, Leeming Bar will become a fitting gateway to the Railway and Dales. Updates will be provided through the Railway’s web site and social media. The Press Release can be seen here.
BARRY WETHERELL'S PHOTOGRAPHS
Shortly before he died, Barry Wetherell passed on to the railway many of his photographs that he had taken over the years. Under the "Early WRA Volunteering", there are now four photo galleries of his photos dating back from 2006 to 2008. More will be added from time to time.
The Wensleydale Railway is a tourist and heritage line starting at the County town of Northallerton to Redmire on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, passing through the Georgian market town of Bedale and the Dales market town of Leyburn, with constantly changing scenery, from the arable lands of the Vale of Mowbray in the east to hills of the Yorkshire Dales in the west.
The line is a predominantly heritage diesel line, with steam services operating over selected weekends, special events and the summer months. For further information please see the timetable page for days on which the steam service runs.
This website shows many photos showing all the various aspects of the Wensleydale Railway. There are dedicated pages showing some of the work and events which is going on each month. In addition the various works teams have dedicated pages to allow them to show some of the projects that they have been involved with. There is also a photo search facility to search for particular photographs.
Use the menus above to select various photo galleries.
These photos can all be used by Wensleydale Railway for their own purposes so long as the photographer is credited. For use external to the railway, please contact me first to obtain permission.
SOCIAL HISTORY OF OUR STATIONS
We are running an ongoing research programme into the history of the Wensleydale Railway, which runs from Leeming Bar to Redmire. At present we have some information on three of our stations - See the Social History pages. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who has a family connection with the railway or can help us piece together its story over the last 150 years. To get in touch, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone 01677-425805.
ARCHIVE PHOTO SEARCH
This website is being developed into a photo archive for the Wensleydale Railway. There are now many more photographs than are contained in the above photo galleries. A photo search facility (see above for the link) is now available whereby the whole archive can be searched for photographs meeting your desired criteria.
